Les Paul Necks: 60's Slim vs 50's Fat
Three words. Lesser break angle. Two ways of achieving it.
Super helpful tip. Thanks!
I have the 30 and the 35 - LOVE THEM BOTH!!!
YOu can also stick toothpicks in the hole and then put the same size screw inside.
Good insight, some guitars need it some don't. Easy to check and be certain. Appreciate the video. Thanks.
You should put the capo directly on the fret.
I prefer direct mounted pickups on looks alone. It looks so clean. I’ve passed on guitars I liked just because I couldn’t get past the pickup rings. The only guitars I’ve actually thought they looked good on were prs.
i use a purple dunlop tortex pick to set my height initially, 1.14, 1.4mm, 1.47?? or something like that. i havent looked at the numbers in a while. great video with lots of little tidbits of info that i love hearing. im not as good of a presenter or speaker as you lol.
aaaand you can add pickup rings even if they are mounted in the guitar
it can keep up when u use a threaded insert, than it wont damage
I thought I would try a wound G string. Then I realized why it didn't sound as loud as the others. The core is smaller. So....they will all be switched soon.
all the guys at Sadowsky and PRS and Warwick, im not sure they follow these directions! theyd have to have a whole building dedicated to putting strings on guitars and basses!
you do know the human body is a resistor,,when you had your fingers on the connection it might make a difference,,not sure,,but dont ever measure voltage like that,,,whammmo
You have to soder just to test strength of pickup??
hey folks have been doing this since, banjo strings started going on guitars. After you find the sweet spot, you may want to heat up the pole again, then let it cool with out letting it move. This should 'glue' it tight, for you. I am wondering if I can get away with this with a Jazzmaster pick up. The D out put is way low. Thanks.
I have used threaded inserts - like those from nectite. It improved tonality a lot, maybe cause of better contact between neck and body...
this properly sets the neck into the pocket...my techs been doing this to my guitars awhile...sorry im a little late here...My tech might have seen this back then...bahaha
Is there any way you can draw me a diagram of an HS setup so the bridge humbucker reads 500k and a neck single coil reads 250k using 1 volume pot & 1 tone pot and a 3 way toggle switch? I can't find a diagram nor have I found anybody willing to draw me a diagram. This is the closest video I've found to what I need. It's going into a customized epiphone Les Paul Junior I did. I would be most grateful if you can draw me a diagram so I can visually see it and learn. Cheers.
Neck-through Strats?
Great trick i've been using on my Tele's and Strat for some time now. I remove the pickguard before resetting the neck. Even had to take something off the pickguard near the control plate to make it fit again which shows how much space there is when it leaves the factory. Also acoustically the guitar really sings to you after doing this.
Nice and clear video
Does this method hold true for bass guitars as well?
I used the small knob for the blend pot on the pick guard and it covered the hole completely.
thanx, but you skipped over action at the nut and intonation.
Hi Kevin glad to see and hear you on the bands. Colin from the UK 😊
there are too many videos like this that bash something because the user is not using the item as intended.
Thank you...Great instructional video!
now you made people more confused, hahaha
This told me exactly what I needed to know! Much appreciated!
Thanks for taking the time to do this, very helpful.
I have this Mustang bass. Very informative. Thanks for the video!
I got a Jaguar SS shortly after it was discontinued for $320 (originally $199). It is my favorite bass of all time. I sold my others (including a high-end Fender P-Bass) and use only this one now. I wish I had had it long ago. I did replace the pickups, but it didn't really need them. I just wanted a little more power in the bridge pickup.
I adore my Jaguar SS and use it as my only bass guitar. It does everything I want beautifully. This is coming from a guy that had a top-of-the-line P-Bass. I think 30" should become the standard.
I just bought a strat (a squier contemporary with that middle position close to the bridge) and it's got a 12" radius....with staggered pole pieces. Yeah, I dont think they thought it entirely through when they developed the pickups for this series. Dont get me wrong, they sound great, but it's noticeably uneven in output. EADand G will all be fat n juicy, but B and e will sound all wimpy. It sucks because I really like these pickups, but I'm forced to swap em out because of that damn stagger.
So, if I have a treble bleed circuit in addition to this, should this pickup be isolated from it? Will the extra resistor in the treble bleed circuit negatively impact my sound?
They break so often because the wood used is too low of a density and strength causing it to easily break if dropped. Mahogony is most often used on guitar necks, and it has a 10,600 psi in strength, one of the lowest strength woods used in guitar necks. These woods are of higher strength, Maple - 13,400 psi, Walnut - 14,600 psi, Oak - 15,200 psi, and Hickory - 20,200 psi. So, why Mahogony is used so often when Hickory is twice its strength is what I would like to know. Hickory is the wood that should be used in my opinion.
Why are you saying 12/64 for the height of the pickup ? 12/64 is the same as 3/16
What I personally don’t like about direct mount pickups even when using the brass brackets is, the whole idea is that the pickups are mounted directly to the body therefore creating more resonance. But what end up happening after make your height adjustment is you pickups are no longer in contact with the body only the screws & foam or screw & the Allen adjust screw so what the point??
Does this work for DiMarzio FS-1?
Great tutorial , thank you ! Can I change the magnet on a F-spaced Dimarzio Super Distortion ? And where to buy ?
Very interested in trying this on my Player PJ Mustang bass, either as seen here or just bypassing the switch and putting in a stacked volume control. I'm already getting usable tones, but I know there's more in there!
Yeah the first LP I got had a slim tapered neck, the next one had a 50s fat neck, I find both really comfortable to play, takes awhile to get use to the fatter neck, I like both.
Awesome video! Thank you!
Thanks a million, your explanation is to something that I stumbled across back in the mid 80's. After retro fitting staggered pickups to a MiJ Strat I got the natural urge to push the poles into a flatter profile. I've been doing it ever since because I always thought they sounded better, however, I learned a long time ago that I also have a strong preference towards 12"R oil and wax finished necks and now I know why I like to push the staggered Alnico poles flat.
I dont have a guitar like that, and this video is 8 years old. I watched it anyway because it was in my recommendations lol.
It’s actually 5/64 bass. And 3/64ths treble with string height. Thats factory spec
I just heard some LP players slag bolt on necks because not neck tenon. Except bolt on's do not have glue between the wood. It's wood on wood.
With my Sire Tele, I can feel the whole instrument vibrating. Maybe because I'm used to LP's.
Can you do direct sound recording please , wonder how the proper high clears the muddy sound
Wood filler + woodglue or superglue to fill that screw hole
